Hi Alida, Pauli, Tanja, and Pieter (for the band)...I have been meaning to get a note off to you with these attached photos ever since we returned from that splendid trip to Asia with Jazzdagen Tours...

You truly out did yourselves with that entire trip! The cruise itinerary was ambitious but how we enjoyed it all. From the sobering poverty of Cambodia to that glittering view from our cabin window in Shanghai, it is all so memorable. Elephant rides, river cruises, great food, museums, interesting traveling companions, excellent music. Fantastic!

I must say that the personal tour by Pieter of that fine Miho Museum was a real highlight...only sorry we didn't have more time there. Of course we have always appreciated and admired Pieter for his musical talents, but to hear his enthusiasm about the museum collection was truly special. If that possibly could be topped, surely the Carillon-Jazz Concert at the Misono did it! Not only was the size of the audience quite unbelievable, but the reactions of that audience to High Sierra's up-beat brand of music were marvelous to watch. I have a choice photo of a row a grim-faced Japanese; then I took the same shot after the music got going. They clapped, they smiled, they cheered, they danced.

It's surely true that music is the universal language; certainly the High Sierra Jazz Band should be applauded for bringing their enthusiasm and talents to Japan. The special numbers by Howard (who can ever resist Howard?), and Brian and Pieter, using arrangements of tunes familiar to the Japanese was a lovely, thoughtful touch. Such talent in that band! Bravo to the Band and Pieter, especially; so many thanks too for sharing the experience with us. Unforgettable!

I suspect you will have a hard time topping this, Alida, but I know you will try with some upcoming trip. Meanwhile, our best regards to all of you.
